Hi,

Has anyone suffered from Meningococcal septicaemia in your 50s? My mum sufferered from it in 2011 and is still not back to her old self. She was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid whilst being treated for Meningococcal septicaemia. She often feels light-headed, and has intermittent periods of numbness on one side of the body. We don't know if this is because of the Meningococcal septicaemia or the wrong level of thyroid replacement medicine. The doctors have done various scans, blood tests but we don't have any answers.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Your input would be much appreciated.

Thank you, Cate

Hi. I am in my 50's and suffered BM and Septicaemia in May 2011. It has left me with frontal lobe damage along with balance probs etc. I will try to respond more fully later but in the meantime you may find it helpful to read my profile and blogs as will give you all the info about my life post BM. Hope it helps. Best wishes to your mum and you.

Hi

I had meningoccocal septicaemia in 2009 at the age of 52, had a bad cold for two weeks, woke up one morning with a really bad sore throat (to bad to smoke, heavy smoker at the tine) thought I would go to doctor next day if no better. Woke up 8 days later in intensive care on a ventilator, with no idea how I got there. Remaind a futher two weeks in intensive care and then 4 days in HDU and then 7 days on a general ward before being sent home.

My health since then has not been great. (I have remained off the cigs since then, a rather drastic way to give up) I have repeated chest/throat/uti can take up to six weeks to clear, breathing difficulties, a floppy trachea, strange sensations in my legs, they feel like they are going to give way all the time, strange sensations in my mouth when eating. I was diagnosed with CFS because I was tired all the time and had no energy, but that turned out to be sleep apnoea (I think airway was compromised with the lenghty ventialtion) I have gained over 4 stone in weight which I am struggling to move, I don't remain well enough for long enough for any exercise programmes to work..

I am not depressed (official sent to a psychotherapist) and have kept my sense of humour and four years of Jeremy Kyle is enough for anyone. I beleive I'm getting all my health problems now and I am going to be a super fit and healthy pensioner and live to a ripe old age (I wish)

Hi Camax100,

Im early 40's but had BM aged 3yrs and VM aged 11yrs. I've just found out that I have a very underactive thyroid. I don't know if its due to my pass illnesses or just something that came on but Im being treated for it. When I know mire about it I'll let you know. I've also lost my first son to Meningicoccal Septicemia at 9mths old (181/2yrs ago) and my eldest daughter has had VM 4 times in 3yrs.. These devastating diseases destroy lives in many ways even for survivors but I live in hope that one day the will find a cure for all strains..
